Halton Food educates residents in Halton Region about sustainable food production and promotes access to local, healthy culturally-relevant food through sustainable community gardening, urban farming and school gardens. Halton Food supports a range of food gardens at different sites across Halton Region: Halton Community Housing sites, partner community organizations, and gardens in public spaces. Produce grown at these sites is harvested and shared by the community, and donated to community food security organizations. Halton Food also delivers presentations in partnership with other community organizations about food garden topics, such as container gardening, seed saving, and composting.

Generation Green is designed “by-youth, for-youth”. It is a multi-faceted program that is delivered throughout the school year with the help of engaged and inspired Halton students. This program teaches students creative and practical strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, how to measure and track their GHG, and how to encourage the community to do the same. Generation Green empowers Halton Youth to become climate leaders in the community!

This conference is an exclusive event and open to all Halton District School Board Students from Grade 7 to Grade 12.

OakvilleReady creates a resiliency hub network that engages diverse community stakeholders to increase their resiliency, community capacity, and understanding around how residents can work together to support each other during extreme weather events. An initial 7 neighbourhood extreme weather resiliency hubs were established in  2019.  These hubs are located in Faith-Based Organizations, which act as engagement and care anchors.  Neighbours helping Neighbours is the call to action for the OakvilleReady program.

OakvilleReady is a partnership with team members from Town of Oakville, Halton Environmental Network, Faith & the Common Good and local communities, including our pilot OakvilleReady Hub locations.

Waste Diversion

The Halton Environmental Network facilitates an impactful Waste Diversion program for community events. We recruit & train volunteers to educate the public and assist with waste  sorting to keep recyclable and compostable materials out of landfills. We work alongside the Halton Region to ensure events use sustainable waste practices.

Halton Community
Climate Plan

To propel community involvement, Halton Environmental Network (HEN) has partnered with the Halton Region to support the development of a Community Climate Plan. This work advances Halton Region’s participation in the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program.

Partners for Climate Protection is a Canada-wide program that guides municipalities through a five-step Milestone Framework to help them take action on climate change. The Partners for Climate Protection network is made up of over 500+ members from across the country.

As a community, we have the responsibility to honour, care for and respect all the Creation gives to provide us with life. This includes the land, water, air, fire, animals, plants and our ancestors. The Anishinabek Peoples have utilized this land for millennia and we would like to acknowledge their direct descendants, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, as the rightful caretakers and titleholders of this land upon which we live, work and conduct ourselves. We acknowledge our treaty relationship and responsibilities to both the land and these original peoples. We also recognize that this land is rich in pre-contact history and customs, which includes the Anishinabek and Haudenosaunee and since European contact, has and continues to become home for Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. And it is in the spirit and intent of the Dish With One Spoon, wampum agreement whereby we will collectively care for and respect the land, water, animals and each other in the interests of peace and friendship and for the benefit of not only ourselves but of our future descendants.
The HEN Office resides on Treaty 22, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.
